Bacon Avocados: Taste, Uses, and Storage Tips
Bacon avocados are a popular avocado variety known for their mild, creamy, and subtly sweet flavor. These versatile avocados are perfect for fresh dishes and are often praised for their smooth texture. If you're looking for new ways to enjoy avocados, Bacon avocados are a great choice for a variety of recipes.
What Do Bacon Avocados Taste Like?
Bacon avocados have a mild and neutral flavor, making them ideal for dishes where you want the creaminess of an avocado without overpowering other ingredients. They add texture rather than a strong taste, which is why they're often used in fresh preparations.
How to Use Bacon Avocados in Recipes
Bacon avocados shine in a range of dishes and pair well with other fresh, flavorful ingredients. Here are some delicious ways to enjoy them:
- Avocado toast: Mash and spread on toast for a simple, healthy snack.
- Sandwiches and wraps: Add creamy layers to your favorite sandwiches.
- Salads and dressings: Blend them into salad dressings or slice them into salads.
- Guacamole: Their mild flavor is perfect for guacamole, allowing other ingredients like lime, garlic, and tomatoes to stand out.
- Stuffed avocados: Halve and fill with crab, tuna, or grain salads for a wholesome snack.
- Smoothies and ice cream: Blend into smoothies or puree for ice cream for a creamy texture.
- Toppings: Use them as a fresh topping for tacos, seafood, ceviche, or harvest bowls.
While these avocados are typically enjoyed fresh, they can also be fried into crispy strips for a unique snack. However, cooking them for too long can result in a bitter taste, so they're best used in raw or lightly prepared dishes.
Bacon Avocado Pairings
Bacon avocados pair beautifully with a variety of ingredients, including:
- Aromatics like red onions, garlic, and chili peppers.
- Veggies such as tomatoes, red bell peppers, and corn.
- Citrus fruits like limes and lemons.
- Fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, and chives.
- Spices such as cumin, paprika, curry, and turmeric.
How to Ripen and Store Bacon Avocados
-
Place them in a paper bag with a banana or apple:These fruits produce ethylene gas, which accelerates ripening. Place the avocado in a paper bag with a banana or apple to trap the gas and speed up the process.
To enjoy the best flavor and texture, ripen Bacon avocados at room temperature. Once ripe, they should be consumed right away or stored in the refrigerator to slow further ripening. Ripe avocados can last a few days in the fridge.
If you've sliced an avocado, prevent browning by sprinkling the flesh with lemon or lime juice, wrapping it tightly in plastic, and storing it in the refrigerator. Sliced avocados will stay fresh for 1-2 days this way.
Bacon avocados are a great addition to your kitchen, offering a versatile and creamy option for countless avocado recipes. Whether you're making fresh guacamole, avocado toast, or adding them to salads, their mild flavor and smooth texture make them a favorite for avocado lovers everywhere.
